painted on location at grindstone, 5:30-6:30 thursday june 15, 2006
transparent watercolor and gouache on 300g/m2 hot-pressed sennelier watercolor paper
about 4 1/8 x 9 1/2 inches
field notes: quiet except for circling gulls who seem to think I will provide dinner. Tide moving out creating rushing sound of water receding. No boats. Partial sun over me, rainy sky over Mt Desert, and Goldsworthyesque rock stacks in the foreground. Tried to get 3 types of painting: wet into wet, layered washes, and dry brush in one painting. Did it work?

field notes: Sunny! Slightly breezy, with no morning clouds; sound and scent of surf; easel set up in pink-blossomed rose bushes whose sweet smells surround me; bald eagle flies by at 8:10; gulls inquiring about handouts repetitively bow toward me in the late morning and early afternoon; Mount Desert painted at 11; raven flies by at 2; Winter Harbor light on Mark Island painted at 3; high tide at 3:30 noisily crashes under the cliffs at my feet; regular stops from human vacationers, as curious as the gulls but not so polite; all day long lobster and fishing boats travel the bay, a flock of common eider ride the waves and dive in the surf, and a song sparrow sings from a tree stump close behind me.

painted on location 10-2:00 monday june 20, 2006
transparent watercolor on 140 lb cold-pressed watercolor paper

field notes: cool, breezy, foggy, damp. Sounds of fog horn, muffled tide coming in at end of Grindstone Point. Some fog at start, grows with painting. Salt air thick with scent. Light becoming both clearer and more pearly as day progresses. Intermittent lobster boats roaring past point as they return to Winter Harbor. Mark Island Light straight ahead. While I painted, a group of bright orange-vested people put a warning marker up on the rocks in the middle. By 2:00 those rocks were underwater.

painted on location, wednesday june 28, 2006
transparent watercolor on creamy white 140 lb rough watercolor paper
5 1/4 x 14 7/8 inches
field notes: constant shifting of fog through trees. Fog, cool, misty damp. Threat of rain. Scent of roses, call of ravens in the pines behind me. Distant sound of boat engines a bass underneath the constant fog horn from over by Frenchman Bay and the surf hitting rocks beyond the islands. Nearby, a wood thrush sings and 12 loons (many adolescents) fly in from far off to the right and begin to call and dive . . . then a car load of loud people descends and the birds all leave or go quiet.
